Bryan Fuller From Horror To Gay Porn?

Note: This is here for several reasons, despite American Gods being listed as fantasy, the violence, death, and horrific nature of it could easily put it in the horror category. Furthermore, Bryan Fuller is a part of it and he previously did Hannibal which was horror. Read at your own risk.

The other day I was looking around Tumblr and I came across an article about American Gods. Bryan Fuller’s latest vomit fest of gore and gayness. The one that he says doesn’t draw any inspiration from Hannibal but if you just watch the trailer you can tell it’s exactly like Hannibal? Anyway, I digress. This is the headline of the article, by the way:

So if that’s not bad enough, here’s a quote from the actual article.

Fuller wanted to challenge hetero viewers. He remembered seeing relatively tame same-sex love in movies like The Color Purple and Prelude to a Kiss and seeing straights in the audience cringe, and he wanted to get in people’s faces, to a certain extent. (Source)

Where to start with that? Because he’s gay and he noticed straight people cringe at what he considers “tame” sex scenes he wanted to challenge the hetero views and confront them with graphic gay sex. Why? Yes, I have come to understand that the characters are gay in the book, but why should this ever be a focal point? Why does this matter? Though Fuller also tries to frame it as “making something beautiful” he also was quoted as saying this (on set)

“I was like, ‘Okay, unless he has a 12-inch, candy-cane cock and can fuck around corners, his dick’s not getting in him,” Fuller recalled. “So you guys need to go back and figure out where holes are.”

Which is a massive change from his really tame and utterly confusing lesbian sex scene in the third season of Hannibal that literally looks like someone picked up a kaleidoscope in order to watch lesbian sex? No, I am not joking it seriously looks like that shit.

Okay when it comes to women, and lesbians, clearly accuracy isn’t a priority. Not only did we get this mess, which he tried to pretend was a super hot sex scene, we also got some half-assed plot point of Alana falling in love with Margot. It makes no sense since in the book Margot had a partner and it wasn’t Alana, and even if that were the case, these two women met once, talked twice, then had sex and were going to get married in the span of a week or so. They loved each other enough that one helped the other one commit murder. Yes, this is…accurate? Because if he hates cringe-inducing same-sex love scenes so much he created one of the worst ones of all time in his own fucking show. Which should have never even been in a horror/crime drama because no one fucking gives a shit about how much sex the characters are having.

This sets an odd precedent for why now he suddenly claims to care about accuracy. Beyond the fact that he’s an openly gay man and clearly overly into any actor he works with on any show, enough to exploit them by having them as scantily clad or naked as possible every chance he gets (watch season three of Hannibal you’ll know what I’m saying) it seems to me that what Fuller actually wants to do is produce gay porn, not TV shows that are book adaptations.

When it comes to horror content, Fuller has shown promise. Season one of Hannibal was morbidly beautiful, just the right level of shocking, with enough violence and gore, that a horror or crime drama would need to keep it interesting. You move on to season two where it’s over filled with love triangles, weird sex scenes with a mythical creature, and people trying to claim consensual sex is rape because they don’t like that Hannibal Lecter is evil (cause this is somehow news to them or unfair). However, despite his limitations on what he could do on network TV, he still really dropped the ball on the lesbian sex which could have been much better, considering he got away with showing a woman mostly fucked by a wendigo in season two.

Luckily I was never a fan of American Gods so I never have to watch it get destroyed with Fuller trying to focus far more on how much sex and nudity he can have than actual plot. I suppose the most burning question I do have is why people keep letting him write anything. He has a very poor history of keeping anything on the air, and he’s scripted and planned more shows that didn’t air than did. When a show of his does air it never makes it past a season two. Hannibal doesn’t count because it was technically cancelled before season three, and season three only aired because it was already produced and cost NBC very little money to put on the air. It was clear NBC was done with the show in sesaon 2 when they moved it to a death time slot in order to kill it.

At this point, I suggest, that people stop giving Bryan Fuller money to turn their books into pornography and someone just fund a production where he can have a bunch of gay men in a pile fucking each other, seeing as how that’s what he’s been trying to film since season 2 of Hannibal, it should make him happy. Meanwhile, give the books to someone who cares more about characters, writing, and plot (beyond love triangles) to transcribe for the screen. All this man is good at doing is isolating audiences with his homosexual bullshit and getting shows canceled.

For a man who shows potential at being good at horror, the rate it devolves into gay sex is alarming. It’s sad that there is potential and talent somewhere in there but instead of working on that aspect he decides it’s far more preferable to make sure a very small minority of people are happy with his content than looking at the bigger picture. Season one of Hannibal shows what good he could do for the horror genre if he stopped having so much of a boner for his own cast and projects and could focus on things beyond CGI cocks and sex scenes.
